The 2012 Grace Award Goes to
Pat and Jim Hutchinson

Pat and Jim Hutchinson have been a dynamic husband and wife team which helped, with others, to develop, nurture and foster the growth of CWC over the past 36 years. With the assistance of Dair Rausch they were successful in getting a program started under the auspices of the Mental Health Association that would focus on improving the lives of many nursing home residents. CWC then became its own separate non-profit organization in 1988 with a mission to improve the quality of life of the elderly and their caregivers. With the help of Ken Wagstaff, who worked with the State Assembly at the time and Joh Vohs from UCD, Pat and Jim were successful in getting the State Department of Health to focus on improving the quality of life of nursing home residents and at the same time raising the stature of CWC within the community. Pat was awarded the City of Davis Brinley Award in 1998 recognizing her many important contributions to the community.

Pat and Jim have participated in every aspect of CWC. Both have been members of the Board and Jim was president of the Board for a period of five years. They have participated actively in the annual BeerFest and in the annual Winter Concert. The Concert, conceived and developed by Stephen Peithman, was a major labor of love for these two. They both played important roles in the behind the scenes responsibilities helping to make it an extremely enjoyable evening for the attenders. The Concert celebrated in 20th annual performance this past year which was feted with a reception honoring the performers.

They were active participants in the in-home respite program developed by CWC assessment nurses to help the elderly stay in their homes as long as possible. Jim’s last client was seen by him weekly over a 17-year period. There is no question of the remarkable commitment of Pat and Jim to the mission of CWC to improve the quality of life of the elderly and their caregivers. On receiving the award Pat said: ‘We were only part of the whole. Citizens Who Care owes its being and stature in this community to all the volunteers who made it what it is.” Unfortunately, Jim Hutchinson died this past April with the knowledge that he and Pat had received the award. His wife continues to serve the community and CWC with the spirit and commitment she has always had.
