Citizens Who Care Presented The Winter Annual Concert

Getting to know you

The Story of Oscar Hammerstein & Stephen Sondheim

February 25 and 26, 2006

Veterans' Memorial Theater, 203 E 14th Street, Davis

The concert was a huge success playing to near sold-out audiences for both shows.

If somebody wanted to invent a story representing everything wonderful about Broadway musicals, it might be about an unlikely friendship between a musical theater legend and his "adopted" son--who turns into a Broadway legend himself.

But there's no need to invent anything, because the story is true--told to the tunes of such keystone musicals as Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Gypsy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, A Little Night Music, and Into the Woods.

It's the amazing story of how Oscar Hammerstein took a young Stephen Sondheim under his wing, and it frames some of the best songs ever written for the Broadway stage.

And you heard it all at the Citizens Who Care Winter Concert, "Getting To Know You," February 25-26, 2006.
Oscar Hammerstein II

Stephen Sondheim

This musical entertainment was created by Martha Dickman & Stephen Peithman
(host of Capital Public Radio's Musical Stages)

Along with the remarkable songs, you heard how Hammerstein gave the teenage Sondheim his first theater job, brought him into the Hammerstein family, taught him how to write a musical, and persuaded him to write lyrics for both West Side Story and Gypsy. Sondheim returned the favor after Hammerstein's death by writing a show with Richard Rodgers, and since the 1960s has created one remarkable score after another--music that would have both surprised and pleased his mentor.
