Citizens Who Care Winter Annual Concert

"On the Sunny Side of the Street"

The Great Lyrics of Dorothy Fields

Was Performed on February 17 and 18, 2007

Veterans' Memorial Theater, 203 E 14th Street, Davis

The daughter of a famous vaudevillian and successful theatrical producer, Dorothy Fields made it to the top of the songwriting heap as a woman surrounded by men, including such peers as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. This year's Winter Concert cast sang her wonderful and familiar songs.

With composer Jimmy McHugh, Fields wrote "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," and "I'm in the Mood for Love." With Jerome Kern she wrote "Lovely to Look At," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "Pick Yourself Up." With Sigmund Romberg she wrote "Close as Pages in a Book," and with Arthur Schwartz, songs like the achingly beautiful "Make the Man Love Me."

Amazingly, Fields' career spanned five decades, as prolific as it was long and successful. With composer Cy Coleman, she penned songs for Sweet Charity in 1966, including "Big Spender" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now."

Dorothy Fields died in 1974 after attending a rehearsal for her final show, Seesaw, whose rousing anthem was "It's Not Where You Start (It's Where You Finish)." She was 69 years old and still on top.
